EV, EV Innovation

BMW Group is charging ahead with plans to surpass EV rivals, including Tesla, with its proprietary battery design.

The automaker is now producing its own battery cell samples for the next generation of all-electric vehicles set to hit the market in 2025.

BMW aims to halve battery costs using its Gen 6 cells, which promise significant improvements:

⭕ 20% more energy density

⭕ Up to 30% more range (around 500 miles on a single charge)

⭕ 60% lower production-related carbon emissions compared to current prismatic cells.

Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW Group’s production boss, firmly believes they are not playing catch-up with Tesla, asserting, “Tesla needs to close the gap with us.

In fact, we don’t see a gap to Tesla.” The company’s in-house expertise in battery design and electric engines sets them apart.

BMW’s deep commitment to EVs is further evidenced by their investment in battery technology research, focusing on the chemistry and physics of cells.

They are also exploring battery recycling and aim to reduce the carbon footprint of battery cell production by up to 60%.
