General Motors, Honda, and Cruise Team Up to Launch Robotaxi Service in Japan in 2026!
General Motors, alongside Cruise and Honda, has unveiled an exciting joint venture to introduce a robotaxi service in Japan, scheduled to debut in early 2026.
Starting in central Tokyo, the service will feature a fleet of Cruise Origin autonomous vehicles, promising a unique mobility experience for passengers with its campfire-style seating, accommodating up to six passengers.
The partnership aims to address the driver shortage in Japan and provide a safer, more accessible mode of transportation.
Subject to regulatory approval, preliminary testing is set to commence next year, with commercial operations beginning in early 2026.
Mary Barra, GM’s Chair and CEO, emphasized the profound benefits of autonomous vehicles, from safety to accessibility, stating, “Through this important partnership with Cruise and Honda, we’re bringing forward innovation that leverages our expertise in cutting-edge software and hardware to help more people around the world get where they need to go.”
Toshihiro Mibe, Honda’s Global CEO, envisions this collaboration as a major step toward realizing an advanced mobility society, offering customers in Japan a new dimension of mobility.
The joint venture will also engage with various stakeholders, including government and transportation service providers, to make this exciting vision a reality.
